RAINSCHEMES FOR INSOMNIACS BY SHAUN CATON : CALL FOR LOCAL PERFORMERS
ARE YOU AGED 16+ AND INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN CREATIVE WORKSHOPS AND LIVE PERFORMANCES? HERE’S YOUR CHANCE TO BE PART OF A SPILL COMMISSION
SPILL Festival of Performance and Shaun Caton are looking for local, volunteer performers to participate in the new work rainschemes for insomniacs. This is a rare and inspirational opportunity for 6 young people to work with one of the UK’s leading ritual performance artists on a major new commission to be presented on 27, 28 and 29th October at Ipswich Art School Gallery in The Atrium. rainschemes for insomniacs is a World Premiere and SPILL Commission in 3 parts and a highlight of the upcoming SPILL Festival of Performance (taking place across Ipswich from Wednesday 26th until Sunday 30th October 2016). SPILL Festival is the UK’s premier artist-led festival of experimental theatre, live art and performance. Inaugurated by performance maker Robert Pacitti in 2007, the festival has become known worldwide for supporting radical new work, presented in accessible ways that are as much about context as excellence.
Participants should be engaging, enthusiastic, creative individuals, committed and completely focused. Participants will wear masks and perform alongside Shaun Caton in this powerful, deeply disturbing, apocalyptic mega-performance for the senses. Participants will receive training and direction in the form of an intensive one afternoon workshop, and will be shown how to activate and operate shadow totems, play percussion instruments to hypnotic effect, perform ritual gestures and actions relevant to the performance.
ABOUT RAINSCHEMES FOR INSOMNIACS AND SHAUN CATON
In rainschemes for insomniacs, Caton works with organic river fetishes, and items loaned from Ipswich Museum collections. He evokes dark, supernatural, fractured histories through an experimental approach to shadow play.
Caton presents the creation of living paintings, with strong references to primitive, outsider, and prehistoric art, culminating in a visually stunning work of great brooding intensity.
Shaun Caton is renowned for his highly original performance work with totemic shadow puppetry, that fuses live painting with installation. He has presented hundreds of performances over the past 30 years and his work has been described as: “like eavesdropping on the home life of a serial killer” – The Scotsman.
