I Am Not From Here is an exploration of home, identity, womanhood and the intricate complications between second generation British citizens.

Born and bred in Birmingham, Amerah always identified as British, only ever visiting Yemen once before moving over there to live in 2002. Language, culture and family all look different outside the West. Arriving back in the UK unexpectedly in 2004 Amerah found it hard to fit back into a fast‑moving city like Birmingham.

In this piece, Amerah explores relationships, the culture of identifying with anything other than ‘wife’ or ‘mother’, and being an Arab woman finding new ways to raise both her own voice and the voices of others.

Amerah Saleh is a spoken word artist born and bred in Birmingham. Her Muslim Yemeni roots give her space to get lost and found on multiple occasions between identity.
