ON THE CORNER: OPEN REHEARSAL
SEKE CHIMUTENGWENDE
THURS 2 JULY 2026 | SPILL THINK TANK
A chance to look into the process of Seke Chimutengwende’s new dance work, set to Miles Davis’ 1972 album On The Corner.
At the height of his “electric period”, jazz musician Miles Davis created his most controversial album to date: a riotous, uncategorisable, collage of sound which outraged critics at the time.
Today, On The Corner is recognised as a major influence on funk, post-punk, electronica, and hip-hop, as well as a monument to the counter-cultural movements which raged outside Davis’ studio in 1972.
In his choreographic homage to Davis’ landmark work, Seke transposes Davis’ musical methods into dance: recording, cutting up, splicing and layering movement to create an “album” of choreography.
This dance is an environment for absorbing and reflecting on the enduring sound and significance of On The Corner, as well as its echoes of the Black Power, feminist and anti-war movements which persist today as explosively as they did half a century ago. Through collective listening and embodied musicality, On The Corner channels Miles Davis’s revolutionary sound to create a work that morphs between riotous intensities and hypnotic dreamscapes, at once a protest, a party, a riot and a ritual. In this sharing, Seke will present ideas, processes and materials from this experimental choreographic journey; listening to and re-imagining On The Corner through dance.
