POPPY JACKSON: A Podcast by SPILL Festival

A podcast series by SPILL Festival

In this episode, I am talking to visual and performance artist Poppy Jackson. If you already know Poppy’s work, perhaps the image that would most readily spring to mind is of her body astride the ridge of a building roof. This performance, called ‘Site’, was made way back in 2015 as part of SPILL, when the festival was still in London. ‘Site’ was the starting point for this podcast, with Poppy recalling the roots of this iconic image as a drawing she made in a sketchbook and how this image came to be embodied as a performance.

Our conversation also covered Poppy’s experiences of motherhood and how it has affected and influenced her creative practice, including her newer performance ‘Tower’ which I was delighted to see in person last year. Hearing Poppy talk about this work certainly leads me to question that cliché about having children being an impediment to artistic creativity.

Images of Poppy’s ‘Tower’ performance can be found here:

As I said to Poppy at the end of this podcast, it was wonderful how this conversation helped me see her work in a new light, especially in terms of her relationship with the Suffolk and Norfolk landscape. I still find myself holding a tremendous admiration for what she does, and I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation.
